Brother, Can You Paradigm? (1)

(A quick note: There are several other LOLcat sites out there, not to mention the ones that float around the internets via email, etc. I’m concentrating on for my “research” because it seems to be the most popular one…and it’s the one I enjoy the most. Also, I will not be enumerating every single paradigm and trend…just a whole bunch of them.)

LOLcats often depict cats in some sort of comedic peril, asking for “Halp.” In this case, the first on the site, we see a cat…being eaten by a chair. (Date: 1/11/2007)

(date: 1/13/2007) LOLcats believe that the best day of the week is “Caturday.” It is their day to relax and party their way, one imagines. In this first Caturday post, it seems that Caturday is a good reason to stop hiding in a bag.

(date: 1/14/2007) I am the LOLrus… Yes, there is an infamous LOLrus in LOLcatland. He had a bucket that he loved dearly, but someone took it away, and the hunt began. (I am treating this particular caption paradigm as distinct from the I has a/I can has? captions as mentioned below, as it concerns itself specifically with that darn bucket.)

(date: 1/11/2007) One of the easiest, and most popular, of the caption paradigms on ICHC is the “I has a…” caption. This is closely related to the caption used in the first posting, the question “I can has cheezburger?” Indeed, much has been made of various cats wanting and, in a few cases, actually getting the desired cheeseburger (or other item as stated. See bucket above.) on the site. As you can see here, this rodent actually has a Karot. I will be treating these similar types of captions as branches of the same paradigm in future analysis.

LOLcat Anthropology

In a fit of insanity, I thought that it might be fun to go through all 530 pages of LOLcats over at Really, it’s kind of an anthropological exploration of a cultural subgroup if you think about it. As I go through the site, I’ll be posting the humorous bits of comedic kitties (etc.) that I discover. I will also be paying particular attention to the trend of translating biblical stories into LOLspeak/the LOLcat culture. It’s fascinating what they’ve done with the creation story and more over on ICHC. I may even forget myself and go so far as to analyze LOLspeak itself. You have been warned.

I think, at this point, that you all now know a bit too much about the way I think. Let’s start with the LOLcats, shall we?

Beginning where I must at the beginning…This is the very first LOLcat listed on the site (date: Jan. 11, 2007):

This rebuttal appeared on 12 January 2007:

No, You Can't Has a Cheezburger

…And this is the first appearance of the “I Has a Flavor” paradigm (at least according to the date stamp):

Random Review: Shorts (the film)

Firstly, to make sure that we are all on the same page, here is the trailer for the film I’m talking about:

Okay, has everyone watched the trailer? Then I’ll get to the Random Review.

I adored Shorts. I kept finding myself laughing out loud. These days, that is a big thing for me. I’m even declaring this film okay for my Mum to see. That’s right, you heard me. (No, Mum. The baby doesn’t get eaten by a crocodile.) On the whole, the film was sort of structured like Pulp Fiction for kids. Yep. It was not in direct chronological order. But that’s okay. It worked out just fine. The characters were constantly surprising me. Just when I thought that I had someone figured out, they would turn another facet to the light. Mind you, this didn’t stop things from getting terribly silly from time to time. That’s why it’s so fun.

And the music ruled! Why can’t I find a soundtrack, Mr. Rodriguez? Why? The Vig and Deb? Can you keep your eyes peeled for this one?

So, to sum up: It was a tangled, hilarious, mass of silliness and action with really fun music. See it!

The Next One

Well, I finally wrapped my brain around the image for JM’s Naturally Curvy. You can see the final result below.

…And I’m feeling a bit like George Michael right now, if Sister Mine will forgive the analogy. ‘Cause, folks, that is a picture of my behind. This image bloomed in my brain, and I said, “Of course!” And then I couldn’t find the sort of picture I wanted on the free image site that I had the link to. So, what else could I do but annoy Koshvader by requesting that he photograph my derriere? (He hates taking pictures of living things, you see.) Well…he took the photo, as you can tell. Somehow I managed to get everything to be the color of the soon to be banner for the site and made it all artsy-looking. And here is the result. My behind immortalized in art.

Right then. Three down. One to go.

Me, The Graphic Artist

By now, I’m sure that you all are familiar with my er…skills in relation to drawing/graphic design. Do I need to mention the sneaker again?

I didn’t think so.

But the other day I got an email from my friend JM who lives in Australia. She was wondering if i could make some 125×125 images for her to use, as I’d made an icon or two for her to use a couple of years ago when she started using LiveJournal. After the demise of 451 Press (yep. it’s done. Good thing I left while I could actually say good-bye.) she’d gone and set up some sites for herself, and she was wondering if I could help her out with some images.

As you may imagine, I protested that I have quite a lack of skill. She replied that I was still better than she was at this sort of thing. So…I said I’d give it a shot. You know why? ‘Cause I actually *love* making icons. That and flair over on facebook, but that’s beside the point.

I’ve come up with stuff for two sites so far, and I thought I’d post the winners here for you to enjoy.

As I understand it, this is the image that JM will be using for Down Under Views.

I rather proud of this one that I did for Inky Blots. Which is good, as it took for-bloody-ever. Every one of those “ink splotches” on the icon is a separate image, you see.

Well, that’s it so far. I have to go back to banging my head against the next project. I’ll be sure to post the next ones here, too.

Hmmmm. Me, the Graphic Artist. Who knew?

In the Vernacular

I’m not sure if you all know this, but I am a big fan of slang. You know, argot or vernacular. Perhaps it’s the snob in me that likes to be “in the know” or it could just be I’m amused by the twists and turns that language takes.

Um…except for adverbs for some reason. There’s an “ly” on that word, people! Yes. Really.

Anyway, I love all of the different ways that people have come up with to say that something is good or laudable and, of course, the opposite. There are the confusing examples (remember “bad”? Which could mean “bad” or “good” depending upon the circumstances? Yes? You’ve just dated yourself. That was about 20 years ago. How do I know this? Well…there’s this high school reunion coming up next year… I know. I feel old, too.) …but we won’t get into those.

A while back there was this phrase used to connote someone (or thing) was very cool: All that and a bag of chips. I loved that one. It was clever. It was a bit more that just being “all that.”

Then came: Made of Win. for example: Oh my God. That was hilarious. You are made of win.

The opposite of Made of Win, is, of course: Made of Fail (or, Made of Suck and Fail, for the really bad things.) This seems to be an outgrowth of the popular “fail” which you can see more about at Fail Blog. (Yes. Fail. As in didn’t manage to do it.)

And right about here you would find a whole bunch of LOL Cat induced slang, which is a place that “fail” and “ur doing it wrong” are popular, but that is a topic that could have a whole post (or series of posts) dedicated to it.

So, at last we come to the good/bad set that I encountered only recently. Whereas you might have previously said, “Oh my God, that is so awesome!” now you can say, “Awesomesauce.” This looks to be quite the time saver. It was only today that I discovered its antithesis: Lamesauce. I called my sister to tell her about this, and she added that she has also encountered “Weaksauce.”

I would just like to point out here that my father makes the best applesauce. Yep. Awesomesauce Applesauce.

Moving on.

We’ve talked about the good and the bad, and now we have…The Retro.

Rad is back. Short for “radical,” which was also used back in the 80s. I’ve seen it in print and I’ve even heard it in conversation. How long before we start hearing “gag me with an entire place setting” again? It looks like style and language both cycle back through. (And for style retro proof check out this music video – La Roux – Bulletproof. Thanks, Dave!)

This has been your slang update.

Random Review: Ginger Beer (by the ginger people)

I’m been meaning to review random things (in an admittedly random nature) on this blog for sometime. So I have chosen to begin with a ginger beer that my sister got for me when she was visiting this weekend.

Random Review: Ginger Beer as made by the ginger people.

If you like the taste of ginger, this is the ginger beer for you. Not too sweet and with that ginger spiciness I like. Yep. Nice and refreshing. I would definitely drink this again, even given that I don’t drink soda pop these days. (By the way, it’s carbonated enough to foam over in the bottle if you’re not careful, so watch out for that. Not that that happened to me or anything.)

Question: Am I the only one who wonders if “the ginger people” are all redheads? Just me then? That’s about par for the course.

13 Things My Ideal House Would Have

Well, I’m still working my way through the same notebook, and look what I found! A list of 13 things that would appear in my ideal house. Obviously, I had to share this with you. What would your ideal house contain?

13 Things, 1 House:
1. A walk-in pantry (like we had when I was little.)
2. A Potting shed (perhaps I’d get more done in the garden.)
3. A workshop/ forge for Koshvader (which would move his work area out of my front room.)
4. An Herb garden (a big one…and perhaps a gardener. Hey. It’s my “ideal” house.)
5. A nice long driveway (Which would set the house back from the road.)
6. A finished basement. (The closest I’ll get to a mad scientist sub-basement.)
7. An Attic (For storage, dontcha know.)
8. The perfect bathtub (You know. Big enough to float in. With jets. Space for candles, etc.)
9. A Walk-in Closet (Because I need more space, darn it!)
10. A two car garage (’cause I’d like to actually park my cars inside for the night.)
11. Five bedrooms (Or perhaps…six. That way Koshvader and I can each have a home office.)
12. A secret passageway (This one is just obvious.)
13. A Library (With one of those ladders and maybe a secret door to a secret room.)

Notes from a Notebook

I’m working my way through yet another notebook. Surprised? No? Well…neither am I, really. Just to keep you all amused I will share with you a few excerpts I have run across…

From a page with notes for a fanfiction that I don’t remember anything about I found this amusing note:
Doctor’s Answering Machine Message: “Off saving the Universe. Back in 5 minutes. Please leave a message.”

Smack dab in the middle of a to do list is this mysterious note:
“My brain feels like it’s moving through treacle” (I guess that I must have been feeling a bit tired on 4/11/06.)

Apparently, I was planning at one point to make a playlist called “Obscure joy.” I wonder where that idea came from.

How about this one? I have a note (from 4/21/07) that says “Everything was going fine until the Royal Family arrived.” Do I even want to know what was going on before they arrived? [edit: I have found the story that this came from! It appears to be an unfinished chapter of a fanfiction. Mystery solved!]

How about this for an obscure note? “Himself” instead of “his heart”? (Yes, that question mark is part of the note. Again, I mystify myself.)

…And that’s only the first third of the notebook. Stay tuned for more (when I’m done typing up the story that I found.)
