Hello all. It’s another of those entertaining brain dump posts. This time I have a mascot for the event. I was walking through the library recently, and when I reached the Children’s section (well, specifically the Parenting Collection in the Children’s Section) what did I see? The resident huge bear sitting in a chair reading a book. I couldn’t resist.

* Speaking of things I can’t resist, you should really stop by and check out my friend Emma’s blogs – Treehouse Jukebox and Phoenixville 365, her celebration of her new town in pictures.

* Have you been keeping up with my travels over at my Where’s Calliope blog? I’m slowly but surely posting my Reno adventures over there. I suppose I would be faster if I hadn’t taken 405 photos while I was gone.

* Have you seen Iron Man 2? Wanna see the folks from Think Geek recreate a scene (and showcase their new product)? Check it out here.

* If you like a spot of Library humour, and have ever done any book weeding, you will love Awful Library Books. (Check out this Computer Book!)

* Do you like Doctor Who? How about Trock (a.k.a. Time Lord Rock)? if you said yes to both, check out the music video for Chameleon Circuit’s song Type 40.

It seems to me that this blog was supposed to entertain someone at work, and I have been falling down on the job. So…here is a bunch of stuff to keep y’all entertained.

* As I may have mentioned the other day, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos is on Hulu. Well, at least season one anyway. Check out episode one here.

* After watching “A Glorious Dawn” did you go check out Symphony of Science webpage?

* Speaking of symphonies, have you watched the YouTube Symphony Orchestra? Check them out at Carnegie Hall (sorry, they are too wide to embedd)- Act 1 and Act 2. (Good music and some really cool stories.)

*…But back to Carl Sagan. Someone recently visited his grave and played a bit of music for him.

* On a sillier note, try the “Geocities-izer” on a website. Make it look like it’s from the mid-1990s.

* Guess where I’m going in another week and a half or so! Reno, Nevada. Am I going there to gamble or take in a show? Nope. I, and a couple of my friends, are going to the National Automobile Museum. I’ll be sure to tell you when to go over to the Where’s Calliope blog to follow my progress.

* And now, for those of you who care about the environment, “NBC is teaming up with Prince Charles for a new TV special about the environment. Harmony, which is slated to air in November, stems from Prince Charles’ three decades of work fighting climate change and searching for new solutions to the worldwide environmental crisis.” You can watch the teaser here. (Sorry, it’s another video too big to embedd.)

* Need an onlineetymological dictionary? How else will you know what a word used to sound like when you need the information at 2 am?

…and this is getting a bit long, so I’m going to break it up into a couple of bits.

* The rather rude, but also hilarious Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling can be found here.

* Jobs of Yesteryear: Obsolete Occupations from npr.org is a very interesting look at how things used to be.

* I mostly looked True West Magazine up for my friend Debbie, but you all might enjoy checking it out, too. They even offer a directory of Western Businesses. And yes…That includes stuff from the “Old West.”

* And, of course, I already told you lot about my friend Laurie’s jewelry shop Acanthusleaf Designs.

* Did you hear about the All-Black Penguin?

…and that’s it. For now, anyway.

Look! My Daddy is Santa!

Well, really, my Dad and Mum recently played Mr. and Mrs. Claus for a bunch of kids at a neighborhood party. So cool! I’m proud of them for doing this and stepping out of their comfort zone. Also? How cool is it that my daddy is dressed as Santa?

In other news, I’ve started a new blog. Yeah, I know, yet another blog. But this one happens to be on a topic that I can’t shut up about: Books being adapted to film. It’s called Did They Film it? (http://www.didtheyfilmit.com/). I hope that, among other things, I can help out those kids that are told to read a book that hasn’t been made into a movie. See? Now I have a place to babble.

And I think I’ll finish this up with a video that is infamous in my family. I like to sing the song really fast.

In a fit of insanity, I thought that it might be fun to go through all 530 pages of LOLcats over at Icanhascheezburger.com. Really, it’s kind of an anthropological exploration of a cultural subgroup if you think about it. As I go through the site, I’ll be posting the humorous bits of comedic kitties (etc.) that I discover. I will also be paying particular attention to the trend of translating biblical stories into LOLspeak/the LOLcat culture. It’s fascinating what they’ve done with the creation story and more over on ICHC. I may even forget myself and go so far as to analyze LOLspeak itself. You have been warned.

I think, at this point, that you all now know a bit too much about the way I think. Let’s start with the LOLcats, shall we?

Beginning where I must at the beginning…This is the very first LOLcat listed on the site (date: Jan. 11, 2007):

see more Lolcats and funny pictures

This rebuttal appeared on 12 January 2007:

see more Lolcats and funny pictures

…And this is the first appearance of the “I Has a Flavor” paradigm (at least according to the date stamp):

see more Lolcats and funny pictures

By now, I’m sure that you all are familiar with my er…skills in relation to drawing/graphic design. Do I need to mention the sneaker again?

I didn’t think so.

But the other day I got an email from my friend JM who lives in Australia. She was wondering if i could make some 125×125 images for her to use, as I’d made an icon or two for her to use a couple of years ago when she started using LiveJournal. After the demise of 451 Press (yep. it’s done. Good thing I left while I could actually say good-bye.) she’d gone and set up some sites for herself, and she was wondering if I could help her out with some images.

As you may imagine, I protested that I have quite a lack of skill. She replied that I was still better than she was at this sort of thing. So…I said I’d give it a shot. You know why? ‘Cause I actually *love* making icons. That and flair over on facebook, but that’s beside the point.

I’ve come up with stuff for two sites so far, and I thought I’d post the winners here for you to enjoy.

As I understand it, this is the image that JM will be using for Down Under Views.

I rather proud of this one that I did for Inky Blots. Which is good, as it took for-bloody-ever. Every one of those “ink splotches” on the icon is a separate image, you see.

Well, that’s it so far. I have to go back to banging my head against the next project. I’ll be sure to post the next ones here, too.

Hmmmm. Me, the Graphic Artist. Who knew?

(King of the Bed)

I’ve been a bit quiet this week, what with having this gosh-awful cold and such, and I have a few things to catch you folks up on. Let’s get to it.

* Frisbee now has a Twitter account. That’s right, the same cat that took over the blog that time is now on Twitter. He’s posting as Mr_Frissers if you wish to “follow” him.

* LibraryThing has sucked me in again. I gave in and got myself a Lifetime Subscription. So much work to do. 196 books entered so far…

* This is so cool! Yes, it pleases my inner geek…twice. Don’t forget that Batgirl was a Librarian.

* Today. Ah yes. Today. Today was day three, and as such I had to go get blood drawn before I could eat. I had a bit of trouble waking up (no caffeine these days. bleh.) But I finally managed to get my act together and drove off.

Only to make a u-turn and park once more so that I could run in and get the form that I forgot. I made it to the parking lot at the hospital and all of the parking spots looked to be blocked off. I took a chance and tried the bottom floor of the garage, and luckily found a spot. I made it to the lab, took a number, and waited with my back to the television screen. The wait wasn’t that extensive, but it was long enough that I was already feeling a bit lightheaded when it was my turn. The lady who was assigned to draw my blood tried my left arm. My left arm, apparently remembering the last blood draw, said, “Oh, heck no!” and the veins went and hid. So, she took all five vials of blood from my right arm. That’s right. Five vials. One of which had a pink top, mind you. I’m thinking that one had some particular girly thing they were testing for.

When we were done I set off with my matching tape and gauze on each arm. My elbow creases were well accessorized. I headed over to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription, sat down, and waited some more. Eventually they called my name to let me know they didn’t know what I was there to pick up. I managed to explain my errand and my current state. The nice lady behind the counter took a good look at me and pointed through the window to a coffee shop. “Go eat something,” she told me. “I’ll have your prescription in about fifteen minutes.”

I scurried off to supply myself with a chocolate croissant and a bottle of water. (No coffee. No chai. Sigh.) When I returned my drugs were ready. I had my quick consult with the pharmacist (2 pills a day for five days. may experience some abdominal pain (like I’ll even notice right now. grrr.) perhaps some moodiness…) And off I went.

So that’s it. The process has started. Here goes…
